NEWSFLASH: SHOWROOM TAX.

Since April 1st 2010, all new cars are subject to a new system of Showroom Tax; in short, the least polluting cars will cost less to purchase whilst more polluting cars will cost more.

As well as minor adjustments to the annual cost of road fund licenses, the first year is subject to a different one-off fee covering both regular road tax and the new Showroom Tax. This varies depending on the banding your car falls into. Cars emitting the least CO2 (less than 130g/km CO2) incur no charge for their first year's road fund licence or Showroom Tax, whilst cars falling into middling categories incur a similar charge to their usual cost of road tax. Cars falling into the highest bandings will require up to or slightly over double the usual annual cost for the first year, and the usual rate thereafter. E.G. Cars emitting more than 255g/km CO2 will have to pay £950 for the first year, and £435 annually thereafter. A breakdown is included below.
